Transport Learning

The Project

Transport Learning, an EU funded project, supports practitioners to develop better solutions for urban transport systems. Its main objective is to create knowledge and capacity on sustainable transport policies for municipalities.

The Need

  • Most cities don’t have an integrated policy for energy savings and mobility management
  • Many officials lack key strengths related to Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning
  • Citizen centric mobility plans are the exception not the norm, since many cities implement solutions without proper planning
  • Awareness campaigns are vital but not properly executed
Approach / Tools
  • Reviewed and assessed existing best practices on sustainable transport training EU-wide
  • Developed training framework and training material using modern teaching and learning techniques
  • Carried out certified training in sustainable mobility’s most pressing needs, namely:
    • Parking space management, access restriction and speed control
    • Mobility management
    • Land use and housing in mobility management;
    • Public transport models
    • Street design, streetscape and traffic calming
    • Walking and cycling
    • Design and implementation of sustainable mobility campaigns
    • Communication training
  • Set a focus on practical work by implementing practical training projects through the trainees
  • Carried out site visits on best practice of sustainable mobility creating political and high-level support for sustainable transport measures
  • Provided e-Learning and an Online Training Resource Centre acting as a one-stop-shop on transport training for transport professionals EU-wide
  • Developed knowledge, training material, skills and capacity and supported improving the quality and attractiveness of public transport, walking & cycling and sustainable mobility measures.
  • Facilitated information exchange among experts and policy-makers on urban mobility schemes in the EU
  • Developed a set of tools to be used by both mobility and energy agencies
  • Promoted a less car-dependent lifestyle to citizens
  • Became a catalyst and helped practitioners deliver actual mobility improvement projects
  • Tangibly achieved energy savings.
